Ashwaghanda

I want to share what I have learned, or am learning, about a fantastic herb that I have been taking for some time now.  It is called Ashwaghanda.  Kind of a mouthful right?  Pronounced just like it looks.

I started looking for an herb that would help me with a few of  my health issues, but most importantly my fibromyalgia.  Ashwaghanda is definitely that herb.  Here are some of the things that it is well known for, and you don't have to take my word for it, do some research and see what you find out on your own.  Anyway, here goes:
  • helps alleviate stress
  • alleviates fatigues
  • promotes energy and stamina
  • aids in concentration, memory, thinking, learning, focus and reaction time
  • protects the immune system and strengthens a weakened one
  • shown in many studies to help reduce brain cell degeneration and even reverse it, which is beneficial to alzheimer's and depression
  • stabilizes blood sugar
  • helps lower cholesterol
  • anti-inflammatory - great news for fibro and arthritis
  • enhances sexual potency as well as fertility
  • has anti-malarial properties
  • reduces pain and swelling
  • prevents the effects of aging
  • can be applied to the skin as a salve or poultice for treating wounds, backaches, and skin irritations
  • helps your body produce its own thyroid hormones - treats adrenal fatigue and thyroid problems
  • prevents and treats cancer growth, tumors and cells
  • helps your body increase it's own white blood cell production
  • helps relax muscle
Ashwaghanda has been used for many things, among those are: arthritis, anxiety, insomnia, tumors,
tuberculosis, asthma, bronchitis, backaches, fibromyalgia, menstrual problems, chronic liver disease and more.  It is a very common herb used in Ayurvedic healing, and is a really strong adaptogenic.  So basically what that means is that is helps your body to balance itself out, whether it is stress, hormones, or what have you.

I have seen really good results just in my own body when I take it regularly.  I ache less in my muscles.  I have less severe headaches.  I have more energy.  I have people telling me all the time I look way younger than I really am.  (I like that one)  I sleep much better. I do not feel the stress even though I know I should be feeling it.  I overall feel much better.

I can't say which might be the better brand of a product to buy or use, because I purchase my own powdered Ashwaghanda root from Mountain Rose Herbs and I make my own capsules.  I take several of these each day.  I don't know what made me stop taking them several months ago, but I ran out of the pills I had made up, and life got a little carried away, and I just didn't make any more for a few months.  I started hurting all over again (not that I stopped completely, but it was at least manageable).  I started having more severe headaches again.  I couldn't sleep, I could focus, and I just felt like crap.  Pardon the expression.  I had to chastise myself and start taking my herbs again, and what do you know.  I am feeling pretty good once again.  I don't always understand it all, but I do know it works.  It is Ashwaghanda for me.

I also take several other herbs on a regular basis and I will get into those a bit more in some of my other herb profiles coming up.  But for now, I promise you won't regret heading to your health food store and picking up a couple of bottles of Ashwaghanda root.  You will notice the difference I am pretty sure.
