Turmeric - My Studies

Turmeric Studies and Plan

Turmeric, one of the most powerful food / spice / herb one could choose to use. In my studies this week, I have been researching information about turmeric. I have a bunch of it sitting in my cupboard and I rarely use it, mostly because I didn't know how to use it. I also have a large cupboard full of herbs that I use on a regular basis for medicinal purposes, as well as cooking, but turmeric is one I have shied away from – until now! How I wish I had done my research on it before now!

Here are – in a really small nutshell – some of the healing powers and benefits of turmeric:

  • really strong anti-inflammatory – treats arthritis and helps fibromyalgia – natural pain killer and can repair damaged skin – great for eczema and psoriasis
  • a potent antioxidant – blocks and neutralizes free radicals
  • boosts brain function – neurons multiply and form new connections – helps improve memory and understanding / learning
  • may help in reversing heart disease – improves the function of the lining of the blood vessels – has shown that it could be almost as effective as exercise on the heart
  • helps prevent and even treat cancer – reduces the growth of blood vessels in tumors – actually kills cancerous cells – suppresses several stages of cancer development – can prevent metastasis from occurring in many different forms of cancer – shown to go into the deepest part of individual cells and kill tumor cells – kills bladder cancer cells – kills lung cancer cells – and many other cancers
  • treats and prevents Alzheimer's – crosses the blood brain barrier – clears the build up of amyloid plaques in the brain
  • incredible benefits against depression – boosts the neurotransmitters and produces serotonin and dopamine
  • helps delay the aging process
  • great liver detox and healing – keeps the liver healthy and protects it - decreases activity of enzymes, triglycerides and cholesterol and increases production of vital enzymes that reduce toxins
  • antibacterial
  • helps with weight management and loss in obesity by boosting metabolism and increases flow of bile breaking down dietary fat
  • reduces overall bad cholesterol
  • aides in speeding up the healing of wounds – controls severe burn pain – disinfects cuts and burns – sprinkle on skin or use in a salve
  • healing to digestive health problems
  • kills fungus better than ginger, cloves, and oregano

Turmeric is hard for our bodies to assimilate, but studies have shown that if it is taken with a bit of black pepper, it increases the assimilation process by 2000%. It also will increase the process when taken with good fats like coconut oil. Some people simply swallow a couple of peppercorns when they take their supplements, others take the pepper grinder and add a few grinds to their drink or food. However you do it, take the two together. I know there are even supplements, Curcumin (the active healing ingredient in turmeric) and black pepper together, even better for those who have a busy lifestyle and just want to swallow a pill or two a day. In fact use those with the recipes below and voila – you will start to feel healthy soon!
